Record player sculpture



    For my record player sculpture project,I used the gear from the tape recorder in order to make the record spin. I put the glues tape to stabilize the loudspeaker. I tried to make it looks like a real record player.

Peter Goin Lecture

       Peter Goin had a video presentation named In Search of Ritual: The Burning Man in the Knowledge Center, Wells Fargo Auditorium on October 3. Peter Goin was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1951. He received his MA and MFA from the University of Iowa. He is not only a Foundation Professor of Art in photography and videography at the University of Nevada, Reno, but also the founder of the Black Rock Institute. Professor Goin is an author and he has written many books such as Nuclear Landscapes, Nevada Rock Art, and South Lake Tahoe. His documentary film In Search of Ritual: The Burning Man was nominated for an Emmy award in 1994. The Burning Man Festival held in the Black Rock Desert in the north of Reno, Nevada that often last up to a week. The Festival’s characteristics include various kinds of happening, art performances, and spontaneous celebrations. It was founded by San Francisco artist Larry Harvey four years ago. He said people in Nevada believe that The Burning Man Festival is an important event for them. He did not realize that the Festival attract thousands of people to participate in the event. The one of the Burning Man originators Danger Rangers plays an important role in the festival. He helps people have enough food and water and makes the festival runs smoothly. Goin compared the two Burning Man Festivals in 1993 and in 2013. More and more people join the festival. The number of people increases from 800 to 50000. They have more decoration and more community driven. In search of ritual: The Burning Man video from the perspective of a different explanation the ‘neo-pagan’ art festival. Heeseop Yoon Exhibition

       Heeseop Yoon had an exhibition on October 8. The exhibition named Found in Lost created by Heeseop Yoon, which is a site-specific drawing installation. Heeseop Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea. She received a BFA from Chung-ang University, Seoul, Korea and a MFA from City College of NY. Her work called Still Life #25 that exhibit in Sheppard Contemporary, Church Fine Arts Building on the campus of University of Nevada, Reno. She uses large scale line to draw pictures on the walls of the gallery. She wants to convey an idea through her large scale installation that is the debris of modern life. The subject matter of her work is disorganized piles of stuff. Yoon uses a lot of thin black tapes and organizational lines to research the notion of perception and memory. The organizational lines are designed for measure the component and conduct the proportional adjustment of the subject matter. She takes a photograph of interiors which including workshops, basements, and storage facilities before she plans to draw. According to the photographs, she draws her art work freehand without erase. Both of the mistake lines and correct lines are reserved on the work. After correct some lines, it will be formed a lot of cross or non-cross lines. It shows how the lines changed her original perception. Therefore, Yoon intends to present a kind of cluttered spaces effect. Finally, she uses transparent polyester film stick the art work onto the walls of the gallery. The theme of site-specific drawing installation is academic that involves in bourgeois gallery spaces, the politics of white cube, and the legacy of Minimalist interventions in space.

David Carter Lecture

       David Carter gave a lecture in the Knowledge Center 107 on September 26. He is a book artist, illustrator, and paper engineer. He was born on 4 March 1957 in Salt Lake City. He lives in Auburn, California now. Carter worked as a graphic designer and advertising illustrator in the late 1970s. Soon afterwards he became as an artist, a book designer, and a paper engineer at a publishing house. Then he paid attention to the children’s book. He shifted his status as an author, illustrator, and paper engineer. For example, he produced over 90 books which including the Bugs series, written and illustrated. He made his first book for children named what is in my pocket, Putnam in 1989. Sometimes, he made books with his wife Noelle Carter. He is best known for his pop-up books for children. He designed and made a lot of books that are very popular; especially the Bugs series has already sold more than 6 million copies. His pop-up books are beautiful and imaginative pieces. The pictures in the book pop up when the pages are opened to amuse children. These books provide interests that attract children to read and make them happy. I believe that Carter as an artist, he will come to much because he owns the creative fire. Carter put his optimistic and cheerful spirit into the research about how to make the children’s book better. He said he wants the reader to touch the art after open the book. He did not like read and he liked hands-on book when he was a child, so he enjoy drawing and painting books. The magical nature of pop-up books interested him in pop-up art and paper engineering.

    I made a rope looks like a fishing net. The cat's cradle is a interesting entertainment. The meaning of the cat's cradle is to seek the way to solve the problem in the entertainment.

I had an interview with UNR police service commander. He introduced the police department and talked about the relationship between police service and students. The purpose of the police department is keep a save and comfortable place for students to live and study.

Project #3: Triptic Video


    I made this project that want to show the sea's vastness. I tried to make the three videos' view looks like a whole. The sea or lake may looks like quiet and peaceful some times, but some times it looks like turbulent and powerful.
