David Carter Lecture
David Carter gave a lecture in the Knowledge Center 107 on September 26. He is a book artist, illustrator, and paper engineer. He was born on 4 March 1957 in Salt Lake City. He lives in Auburn, California now. Carter worked as a graphic designer and advertising illustrator in the late 1970s. Soon afterwards he became as an artist, a book designer, and a paper engineer at a publishing house. Then he paid attention to the children’s book. He shifted his status as an author, illustrator, and paper engineer. For example, he produced over 90 books which including the Bugs series, written and illustrated. He made his first book for children named what is in my pocket, Putnam in 1989. Sometimes, he made books with his wife Noelle Carter. He is best known for his pop-up books for children. He designed and made a lot of books that are very popular; especially the Bugs series has already sold more than 6 million copies. His pop-up books are beautiful and imaginative pieces. The pictures in the book pop up when the pages are opened to amuse children. These books provide interests that attract children to read and make them happy. I believe that Carter as an artist, he will come to much because he owns the creative fire. Carter put his optimistic and cheerful spirit into the research about how to make the children’s book better. He said he wants the reader to touch the art after open the book. He did not like read and he liked hands-on book when he was a child, so he enjoy drawing and painting books. The magical nature of pop-up books interested him in pop-up art and paper engineering.
