Project #5: Experimental Audio Tour

I had an interview with UNR police service commander. He introduced the police department and talked about the relationship between police service and students. The purpose of the police department is keep a save and comfortable place for students to live and study.

  1. This was such an informative tour and it definitely made me feel a lot safer while walking around the Quad in the dark. There was a lot stated during the recording that I didn't know, so it could be a really helpful tool for new students!

    Thanks!

    1. Please be respectful of other student's artwork. Constructive critiques and helpful comments are what Joe asked for, so there is no need for poorly worded bullying.

  3. An informative piece. I had never actually heard from any of the UNR police, and hearing the breadth of their responsibilities was very different. It may have benefited from some editing, but still, a good tour.

  4. This piece was so different than any other we experienced. Great job getting a knowledgeable person to interview. I've spoken with him once before and he was a great choice. The quad was also an excellent place to do this. It seemed even safer after I listened to your piece too!

  5. The pure spoken word was powerful in this concept. The dark quad with only natural sounds can be intimidating for students to walk alone. The voice in the headphones, while not saying anything personally reassuring, was a rock to place your fears on and stabilizing. The commander clearly has passion and dedication to the university, and we as students are safer for it. Perhaps the timing on the walk was a bit fast, but something can be said for standing still forcing the mind to focus.

  6. High quality recording and great information. It's good to know that campus police is working to improve the issues that concern us students.

  7. This was a very interesting piece that yielded a lot of very interesting information from the police officer that I had no idea about!

  8. Lots of good info, interesting! I like that the campus police are open to helping with many different types of problems outside of tradition police work as well.

  9. What I thought was really interesting about your audio was actually listening to it while it was dark outside. The officer you interviewed provided a lot of useful information about the police department and walking around the campus listening to his voice really made it reassuring that I know I have somewhere to go if I need help. Walking around campus at night is very sketchy since you never know who is out there. Listening to the officer and walking around at night made me really think about what he was saying and realizing the fact that anything could happen at any moment. I agree with Serina that the walk was a bit too fast for the audio but I feel like there is potential for people to take the opportunity to wander a bit and make their own path. Nice job though!

  10. I was amazed at how much the officer had to say, it wasn't just light answers to question about what the police force did on campus but in depth very detailed descriptions of all of their duties. It made me feel safer, and worked well contrasted with a simple walk in the quad during the hours we would feel less safe.

  11. Listening to this piece by myself at night was definitely interesting. The officer you interviewed definitely sounded intelligent and proud of his job, and was very reassuring to listen to which gave me a sense of safety. It was great to learn more about how the police work around campus and how much they are dedicated to their duty, Overall, really nice and informative.

  12. Good Job Lian! I learned so much I had never known before about the connection between police and campus/students. I think it was really beneficial that we as a class listened to your piece on campus while it was dark too. I'll definitely ask a police officer if im on campus and ever need a ride now :)

  13. Very informative. I thought it was very fear-provoking listening to the officer talk about crime while we walked around at night. Also, very crisp and clean sound.

  14. A dark Quad was a great setting for this audio tour. It brought about some very interesting emotions. At once, I felt safer thanks to the voice on the other end talking about what he (and the department) did to keep campus safe, but it also made me more aware of just how dark the Quad was, and how I didn't really want to leave the lighted path... Or maybe it might have been kinda fun to walk through some darker, creepier parts of campus!
The audio was also very clean and nice to listen to. Good job!

  15. The location of you piece was incredibly effective, especially at the time of night that it was presented. As one of the more isolated locations on campus at the later hours of the evening, it was reassuring to hear the words of one of our university’s police officers and to be refreshed by their objectives as a department.

  16. Your work was very interesting. I was slightly confused at first, as to why I was listening to this interview, but it came together very well. I am totally impressed with the quality of the audio and the ease at which he spoke. The location and time for your piece was perfect. Great job!
